He is married, and he and his wife Kathy have two beautiful daughters, Kaitlin and Victoria. They enjoy spending time together; especially travelling together on family vacations.
Professional Background
Education Prior to Entry into the Financial Services Industry
Prior to choosing a career in the financial services industry, Shawn attended the University of Saskatchewan, completing three years of an Electrical Engineering Degree, and earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree. At the University, he also completed courses in Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Sciences. During his last year, the Department Head of Political Studies hired Shawn to perform statistical analysis for a book that he was writing. Shawn took a year off after his BA before going back to University to start his path towards a Law Degree. In 1994, he entered the Financial Services Industry with Metropolitan Life. It didn't take long for him to develop a passion for and excel in this industry, which led him to a secondary educational path in the Financial Services Industry.
Financial Services Industry Education
Shawn completed the necessary exams to obtain his life insurance license and went on to complete the Life Underwriters Association Training Courses which provided him with the Level II life license. Committed to attaining the highest level of qualification in his chosen profession, he then pursued the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) course. He received his Certificate in Financial Planning from the Canadian Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (CAIFA) in 1999, and in 2000, he completed the 6-hour exam for the Certified Financial Planner designation.
To further develop his knowledge, Shawn has completed the highly recognized designation of Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU). Achieving this designation indicates a high level of knowledge in the areas of Taxation, Law, and Estate Planning as it pertains to individuals, partners, and corporations.
Shawn's focus on providing his clients with the best and most current financial advice led him to complete his Canadian Investment Funds course, the Canadian Securities Course, and Conduct and Practices Course. He continues his commitment to education by taking courses to stay current in the Financial Services industry.
In 2015, Shawn enrolled in the CCS Designation course to become a Certified Cash Flow Specialist. The Certified Cash Flow Specialist (CCS™) is the first official designation in the field of Cash Flow Planning. Utilizing the designation will enable him to quantify the value of his advice by adding Cash Flow Planning to his practice. A financial plan is only worth the paper it's written on without a way to fund it. By adding Cash Flow Planning to his practice he will be able to help clients to find the money to help them achieve their goals.
Continuing with further educational development, in 2020, Shawn completed his Certified Health Insurance Specialist (CHS) designation. This designation provides the necessary knowledge to work in the Employee Benefits industry as well as provides an enhanced comprehension of individual insurance products to ensure the right fit for clients.
